Researchers at the School of Medicine are leading a nationwide clinical trial to determine whether one of the most commonly used probiotics can safely and effectively treat infants and toddlers suffering from acute gastroenteritis, otherwise known as stomach virus or “stomach flu.” David Schnadower, MD, is heading the trial.

| A new study, led by Jenine K. Harris, PhD, assistant professor at the Brown School, examined use of the hashtag #childhoodobesity to track Twitter conversations about the issue of overweight kids. She sees an opportunity for public health groups to share sound information.

| Federal agencies funded through industry fees are using the revenue to substantially increase regulatory programs and staffing, according to an annual
report examining the U.S. budget. WUSTL’s Weidenbaum Center on the Economy, Government and Public Policy and the George Washington University Regulatory Studies Center released the report.

| Scientists at the School of Medicine have produced the first detailed images of a protein important to viral infection. The images, from Phyllis Hanson, MD, PhD, and her colleagues, are of molecular scissors that let viruses such as HIV bud from infected cells.

| Colin Nichols, PhD, the Carl F. Cori Endowed Professor and director of the Center for the Investigation of Membrane Excitability Diseases, has been elected to the Royal Society. The honorary English organization is equivalent to the National Academy of Sciences in the U.S.
